Forming strong and long-lasting relationships is vital to the growth and success of any firm, and with many more companies now tapping into international markets the scope for development across the globe is huge.

Kazakhstan - a land rich in the production of oil and gas - is fast becoming one of the most popular countries for UK investment. Located in central Asia, Kazakhstan is also tipped by many experts to become one of the world’s largest oil producing countries within the next 10 years.

Having recognised the potential for business in this region, Aberdeen-based industrial and waste disposal specialists, MS Industrial Services Ltd (MSIS) recently took part in a fact-finding mission to Kazakhstan, set up by Scottish Development International (SDI), in partnership with Business Gateway.

MSIS business development manager, Louise Rumbles, joined 12 other business representatives from the likes of Nice and Middlesborough on the fact-finding trip, which explored development opportunities in the country.

The six-day trip saw delegates visit the western city of Atyrau where they investigated business opportunities, met with potential clients and liased with potential partners.

Chevron TCO and Agip KCO, two of the most active international companies in the region hosted a series of facilitation forums allowing the visitors to meet with companies who were looking for local partners to team up with.

Louise believes the trip was a great experience, not in only in terms of boosting MSIS’ business contacts, but also on a personal level.

“As the only woman on the trip it was a little daunting at first but everyone was so friendly which made it a lot easier,” explained Louise.

“From a business perspective we have identified Kazakhstan as a possible new market for our services. As the seventh largest country in the world it has the potential to generate big business, especially when the expected oil boom hits.

“The trip was useful in so many ways, in that we gained a good understanding of the Kazakhstan market and a better knowledge of how business works over there.”

Louise added: “As specialists in oil rig repair, maintenance and waste management we are eager to establish ourselves in places like Kazakhstan where the prospects are great.

“We gathered a lot of contacts on the trip and have already received a number of enquires which is extremely encouraging, especially after just one visit. We also got the chance to meet with businesses that already have a presence in the area, which provided a good opportunity for us to ask questions and gauge potential.

“The trip came at a good time for us, especially on the back of us having landed our first international contract in Equatorial Guinea. By expanding our international portfolio in line with our strategic plan, we hope to be conducting business in Kazakhstan in the near future.”

As a result of the trip Louise, together with other delegates, recently attended a follow-up seminar in Aberdeen where Erlan Idrissov, Kazakhstan’s ambassador to the UK was present along with Nurgali Ashimov, the Akim of West Kazakhstan and his delegation.
